World War 1 Centenary

12th November 2018

To mark the centenary of the end of World War 1, Year 5 and 6 visited the local Methodist Chapel and met with Councillor Dick Cole. As the children entered, they noticed sitting on the pews, were nine plastic silhouettes which represented the nine soldiers who did not return to their families at the end of hostilities.
All four classes had been reading biographies of the nine soldiers (thanks to research by Cllr Cole) and creating pieces of work including letters home from the trenches and descriptive writing about marching to 'The Front'.
A special WW1 Centenary display was created in school with contributions from every class. Individual poppies were created on square pieces of paper using a range of mediums. Seeing so many poppies really made everyone think about those who lost their lives due to conflict.
