Emergency Shelter Building in the Faraway Forest

17th September 2019

Year 6 have been learning about natural disasters and their impact on communities. Inspired by tragic events experienced in the Bahamas as Hurricane Dorian moved through the Atlantic, the children put themselves in the position of survivors who needed shelter. They designed and made emergency shelters that survivors could have pitched and used.
The activity made us all appreciate how hard it is to recover after a natural disaster where precious resources are hard to come by. The children even started to think about how their shelters could be dual-function - using the shape of the tarpaulin to collect rain water or protect food from storm surges.
Our next activities will be to build a radio (to listen to important news updates) from component parts and to work out how to use the sun to produce clean water.
In the Spring Term, we'll be visiting Shelterbox where we'll be able to feedback what we learnt and learn more about disaster relief.
