Rocket Building Day

Year 5 classes Heligan and Trelissick had an exciting day on Tuesday 11th October, designing, building and launching their own rockets! As part of a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) team in Cornwall, George Slater, who has worked on many aircraft during his career in Engineering with the RAF, visited Indian Queens School to impart some of his knowledge on our budding youth-engineers!
After a presentation in the hall about the features of various aircraft, including rockets, children were tasked with designing and building their own rocket, taking into account many factors including drag, lift, fuselage length, trajectory and air pressure.
It was such an exciting day and the children asked some great scientific questions and problem-solved in very ingenious ways to improve the flight distance of their first rocket before rebuilding a second one ready for an afternoon launch - to see whose aircraft would be king of the skies!
It was fantastic to see the children so engaged in science and technology and staff could clearly see that a lot of fun was had and that many of the pupils have the enquiring minds of future engineers!
