Year 6 Disaster Shelter Building

Year 6 have started the year by learning about extreme weather in the form of hurricanes. We imagined we'd been stranded after a hurricane with only items from a Shelterbox disaster relief crate to aid us.
We designed and constructed shelters that would keep us dry in the short-term while also collecting precious drinking water. We learnt a lot about how to adapt designs and the importance of working as a team.
Throughout the year we'll be learning more about how climate change is affecting our weather and environment.
Mrs Thorp even came and helped recreate torrential rain to see if our shelters stood up to rigorous hurricane rain bands - luckily we soon found ourselves in the calm of the eye.
Year 6 will be moving on to learn about the threat of wildfires to population centres and creating themed poems on the subject. We'll also be thinking about how nature and art can combine to raise awareness of environmental issues.
